In National Capital, 3000 Tons Of Solid Waste Remains Untreated Daily: Supreme Court Highlights Disastrous Situation In Delhi
Live LawThe Supreme Court Thursday strongly criticized the Delhi government for the lack of progress in implementation of solid waste management, highlighting a gap of 3,000 metric tons per day between the waste generated and the waste treated in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi area. A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice AG Masih expressed disappointment over the authorities' failure to implement innovative solutions to bridge the waste treatment gap and to implement Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. On November 11, 2024, the Court had directed the Delhi Chief Secretary to convene meetings with stakeholders and file a comprehensive compliance report on implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules. During the hearing today, the Delhi Chief Secretary, appearing virtually, informed the Court that meetings had been convened immediately after the Supreme Court's order dated November 11, 2024, to discuss the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules.
