Why Stalin and his Opposition friends are batting for nationwide caste census
India TodayThe big message that has emerged from M.K. Stalin’s national conference on social justice is a strong pitch for a nationwide caste census. Opposition leaders joined the Tamil Nadu chief minister on a virtual platform on April 3 to argue for caste census as a credible tool of social justice since it can provide concrete data to open up opportunities to the extremely marginalised sections among Indians. Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, National Conference supremo Farooq Abdullah, former Karnataka chief minister Veerappa Moily and Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav were among those who participated, along with representatives from the Aam Aadmi Party, Trinamool Congress and other parties. Political observers believe a caste census can be disadvantageous to a nationalist party like BJP, which conventionally bats for—and derives electoral strength from—homogeneity of the Hindus.
