Opinion: BJP's dilemma post phase 2 - To charge the core or hold on to neutral voter
India TodayIn the aftermath of Narendra Modi’s attack on the Congress party’s alleged plan to redistribute wealth, the Opposition has charged the Prime Minister of fanning communal flames and approached the Election Commission of India to take action against him. In the 2014 general elections, 36 per cent of Hindus voted for the BJP, which translated into a 29 per cent vote share out of its total of roughly 31 per cent. In the 2019 general elections, support from Hindus increased to 44 per cent for the BJP, translating into 35 of its total vote share of roughly 38 per cent. This shows that the ideological vote share of BJP was just 23 per cent out of its overall vote share of 31 per cent in 2014, eight per cent being the neutral or Modi factor vote who supported the party for reasons other than Hindutva, as per the author’s calculations. In 2019, the ideological vote share of the BJP was 26 per cent out of its overall vote share of 38 per cent, 12 per cent being the neutral or Modi factor vote.
