WA public sector unions step up fight for pay rises as Australian minimum wage boosted

Western Australia's public sector unions are preparing to step up their fight for greater pay rises at the state level in the wake of the Fair Work Commission's decision to increase the minimum wage by 5.2 per cent. Key points: The national minimum wage has been lifted by 5.2 per cent The WA government has only raised public sector wages by 2.75 per cent Unions are preparing to go to battle to get a better deal Under the state's public sector wages policy, announced late last year, workers were offered a 2.5 per cent pay rise per year, plus either an additional 0.25 per cent each year or a $1,000 sign-on bonus. But with the national minimum wage today rising by 5.2 per cent to $21.38 an hour, Community and Public Sector Union secretary Rikki Hendon said the government was under increasing pressure to up its offer. Last week NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet announced a three per cent pay rise for the state's public workers, as well as $3,000 payments to healthcare workers for their efforts during the pandemic.
