Offshore sand-mining move will wreak havoc on marine ecosystem: Satheesan

Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan on Wednesday slammed the Union government’s plans for offshore sand-mining off Kollam, asserting that it would wreak havoc on the marine ecosystem, destroy the region’s fisheries economy and accelerate erosion along the Kerala coast. Mr. Satheesan was inaugurating a ‘coastal march’ taken out by the Revolutionary Socialist Party from Vizhinjam demanding immediate roll-back of the mining plans. The three blocks covering 242 sq km picked for mining off Kollam was part of the ‘Kollam Parappu’ which ranked among the most fertile fishing grounds along the Indian coast, Mr. Satheesan said. Looting mineral wealth The mining proposal would pave the way for large corporates to loot the immense mineral wealth of the Kerala coast, Mr. Satheesan said.
