2024 on its way to being the hottest year ever, break record set in 2023
India Today2024 is set to become the hottest year on record, with global temperatures expected to remain elevated into early 2025. This alarming prediction from European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service follows a series of extreme weather events worldwide, including severe droughts, floods, and heatwaves that have wreaked havoc across multiple continents. C3S reported that from January to November 2024, average global temperatures have exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time since records began. "While 2025 might be slightly cooler than 2024 if a La Nina event develops, we will still experience dangerous heatwaves and other extreme weather conditions," cautioned Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer at Imperial College London. The recent UN climate talks resulted in a $300 billion deal aimed at addressing climate change, but many poorer nations criticised it as inadequate given the escalating costs of climate-related disasters.
