The Tories and Labour have announced that they will fight the next general election on a promise to keep the pensions triple lock. The mechanism guarantees that the state pension goes up every year by whichever is higher of earnings, inflation - which remains stubbornly high at 8.7 per cent - or 2.5 per cent. Mel Stride, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said the Conservatives will “almost certainly” commit to keeping it beyond the end of next year. Asked whether the triple lock would be in the party’s manifesto, Mr Stride told LBC: “I think we do have a particular duty to pensioners.
