Gone too soon Meena Kumari, one of Hindi cinema’s best-loved and most controversial stars, died in 1972 at the age of 39. Her account of this telephone call and of a subsequent visit to Paradise substantiates the inconveniences my heroine faced at her brother-in-law’s residence: ‘When I telephoned Mehmood’s house I got no satisfactory answer about Meena. ‘If she can’t come on the telephone,’ he said, ‘how can you just go to her house.’ Finally, they went to see Meena, and outside the house the interrogation started again. By the end of 1966, Mr Dharmendra, a big star now, had disappeared from the scene, and the new man in Meena Kumari’s life was a genteel gentleman called Rahul. She went around telling her friends, ‘You must see Mere Apne.’ Meanwhile, her own performance was reviewed ravingly: ‘As the old woman Meena Kumari merits kudos.
