Sector by sector: How the ‘pingdemic’ has brought chaos to Britain

The Telegraph

The "pingdemic" of workers being told to self-isolate by the NHS app is wreaking chaos across the country, with supermarkets and pubs forced to close and reports of food shortages in some areas. Recent figures showed more than 500,000 people in England and Wales were "pinged" by the app in the week to July 7 – up 46 per cent on the previous week. Pubs Greene King has been forced to shut 33 pubs in the past week after staff were told to isolate by the app, while other venues have had to shorten their hours. Nick Mackenzie, the chief executive of Greene King, which runs 2,500 pubs, hotels and restaurants, called on the Government to expand its test and release scheme to allow staff who test negative for Covid to return to work after being "pinged".
