Balancing an inflated membership

As Middle Eastern countries increasingly seek economic reform, political independence and diplomatic diversification in regional and global affairs, joining the BRICS is a step in keeping with their interests and strategic needs. In 2022 alone, China's bilateral trade with the Middle Eastern countries reached $507.15 billion, with an average annual growth rate of nearly 15 percent over the past five years. These are all alluring factors to the Middle Eastern countries, who wish to diversify their oil-intensive economies and blunt the influence of Western sanctions through major trade and energy partnerships with the BRICS nations. By gaining BRICS membership, the Middle Eastern countries hope to increase their presence in global affairs and expand their regional influence.
