As part of President Xi Jinping's signature anti-corruption policy to catch the "tigers", China this week hanged the biggest "tiger" it caught. Xi's China has been handing out severe penalties, including death sentences, for high-profile officials and businesspeople involved in major corruption cases, since he came to power in 2013. CORRUPTION IS SERIOUSLY DEALT WITH Although China keeps its execution data under wraps as "state-secret", a 2023 report by the US-based DeathPenaltyInfo revealed that China remained the world's top executioner. These severe penalties, including the death sentences, are part of President Xi Jinping's broader anti-corruption campaign aimed at "bolstering China's financial stability and integrity". "Therefore, to reform the present political system might be the best way to overcome the corruption problem," notes Zhenjie Zhou, the author of the 2022 paper, 'The Death Penalty in China: Reforms and Its Future'.
