PM Rajapaksa to discuss issue of Indian fishermen trespassing into Srilankan waters with PM Modi
Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Mahinda Rajpaksa is likely to raise the issue of Indian fishermen allegedly trespassing into his country's waters during his virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. “This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first such virtual engagement with a neighbouring country and also Prime Minister Rajapaksa’s first diplomatic engagement with a leader of a foreign country after he was sworn in as PM on August 9, 2020,” Ministry of External Affair spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said during a weekly briefing on Thursday. Ahead of the summit-level meeting, Srilankan PM held a meeting on Friday with relevant ministries, officials at the Prime Minister’s Office where Sri Lanka’s northern fishermen voiced their difficulties in the hope to seek 'a solution for the long term issue that has affected their livelihood due to the pandemic'. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajpaksa will be discussing the ongoing fishery dispute and the difficulties faced by the Northern Fishermen with Prime Minister Narendra Modi via the virtual summit to be held tomorrow,” a statement by the Srilankan PMO said.
