New solar arrays to boost power on Space Station: Two astronauts set to conduct over 6-hour-long spacewalk

India Today

Days after the SpaceX Dragon docked with the International Space Station, two astronauts will venture out of the airlock on Wednesday to conduct a spacewalk. The astronauts will install solar arrays on the space station to give the ageing laboratory a much-needed power boost. Astronaut Thomas Pesquet and flight engineer Shane Kimbrough will conduct the spacewalk to install the first two of six ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays to ultimately upgrade six of the station’s eight power channels. Ageing ISS needs critical power boost "The current solar arrays are functioning well but have begun to show signs of degradation, as expected since they were designed for a 15-year service life," Nasa said in a statement. To ensure a sufficient power supply is maintained for Nasa’s exploration technology demonstrations for Artemis and beyond as well as utilisation and commercialization, Nasa is augmenting six of the eight existing power channels of the space station with new solar arrays," Nasa had said earlier in January.
