Nearly 1m homes must get Radio Teleswitch energy meters replaced in the next nine months or face losing hot water

Daily Mail

More than 800,000 homes with Radio Teleswitch energy meters should have the devices replaced by 30 June 2025 to avoid losing access to heating and hot water. RTS meters piggyback off the long-wave channel for BBC Radio 4 in order to communicate with energy firms, and many date back to the 1980s. Energy firms pay the BBC to keep these RTS meters running, but the national broadcaster has finally had enough, and will shut down Radio 4 longwave for good next June. Ofgem said: 'The RTS system, which uses long wave radio signals to tell some electricity meters to switch between on and off-peak, is no longer viable – and without a meter upgrade some affected homes, schools and businesses could be left without heating and hot water, or unable to turn off their heating.'
