Sammy Sosa acknowledges ‘mistakes,’ moves closer to reunion with Cubs

New York Times

The estrangement between Sammy Sosa and the Chicago Cubs appears to be ending. At the 2018 Cubs Convention, Ricketts referenced baseball’s “Steroid Era” and his belief that “players from that era owe us a little bit of honesty.” According to a 2009 New York Times report, Sosa was among the players who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug during what was supposed to be an anonymous process in 2003. At a Congressional hearing in 2005, an attorney read a sworn statement on Sosa’s behalf that said: “To be clear, I have never taken illegal performance-enhancing drugs.” Now 56 years old and a distant figure in Cubs history, Sosa released a document dated Dec. 19, 2024, on the letterhead of Aurora Global Consulting, LLC. I never broke any laws, but in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize.” A statement and an apology from Sammy Sosa: pic.twitter.com/jthuuULVrh — Marquee Sports Network December 19, 2024 Sosa launched 609 home runs during his career, yet he never received more than 18.5 percent of the vote from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America during his 10 years on that Hall of Fame ballot. In my heart, I have always been a Cub and I can’t wait to see Cubs fans again.” Sosa’s isolation seemed even more pronounced given the number of former Cubs players who regularly attend the team’s convention each winter, show up for spring training in Arizona and visit the Friendly Confines during the season.
