Centre Urges SC To Issue Directions To Curb Female Genital Mutilation in India

Live Law

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of a PIL seeking a ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) in India. The Attorney General argued that the practice is a crime punishable with imprisonment of up to seven years under existing laws. The Maharashtra legislature has also passed a law prohibiting social boycott for non-compliance with community norms. The apex court has issued a notice to the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi to serve copies of the petition. The hearing is expected to take place in July.
