Ward 173 on a zero waste mission
The HinduIn a major move to make ward 173 of Zone 13 a ‘zero waste’ model ward, the Chennai Corporation has built five additional vermi-composting pits at MRC Nagar. For nearly two years now, residents of the locality have been promoting source segregation by handing over waste, segregated as organic and inorganic, to conservancy workers who process it in the three pits that have been built on a vacant plot at MRC Nagar. “We make a lot of money by selling waste and it is used to provide bins to each household,” says Arul Priya, coordinator of the solid waste management programme of MRC Nagar. Only 100 kg of organic waste is processed in the three pits while around 550 kg of waste is generated a day,” said Mohammed Dawood, director business development, Earth Recycler.
