When last I saw Sean Marks, I could hardly tell his professional world was crumbling all around him. Fewer than two months later, with the Nets’ Tuesday announcement that Kevin Durant has decided to “move forward with our partnership” fewer than three weeks after he had called for the GM and head coach Steve Nash to be fired, here’s Marks with the winning hand. And if you thought Durant’s contractual calculus was curious, consider this context: Johnson had signed a historic 25-year, $25 million deal — one that would put him in a Lakers management role when he retired — just five months before. The prospect of landing the great Kevin Durant on a four-year deal wasn’t enough to inspire Boston to include Marcus Smart, Toronto to include Scottie Barnes or Memphis to include Jaren Jackson Jr. or Desmond Bane. And if the Nets are somehow able to weather all this chaos and win the whole thing next season, one can imagine the look on Marks’ face at summer league next July.
