Mental health services still lacking 10 years after Cairns child killings, relative says
ABCIt has been a decade since the tragic deaths of eight children in a suburban home in Far North Queensland. The house at 34 Murray Street in the Cairns suburb of Manoora, where Raina Thaiday killed seven of her children and a niece, has long since been demolished. But Mr Bedford said there was still a need for mental health services that better reflected the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. "And even still today, people are not being able to access the mental health services and support services that we need in our communities, in our remote communities. "We're seeing issues here in Cairns 10 years on that we didn't see before that I would say are part of not dealing with underlying causes of mental health and not addressing issues properly.
