Lonsdale desalination plant to quadruple output as reservoirs drop to 20-year low
ABCA desalination plant south of Adelaide is set to ramp up production as local reservoirs hit their lowest levels in more than 20 years. SA Water's senior manager of Water Futures and Security, Ashley Kingsborough, said there was good water availability in the Murray River — with basin storage sitting at about 64 per cent. Dr Kingsborough said the desalination plant usually produced approximately 5.3 gigalitres a year, but would be ramping up "approximately four to six times more than normal" with plans to produce between 20 and 30 gigalitres this year. "In the Eyre Peninsula, we have launched our water security response plan, and we're currently in level two on the Eyre Peninsula and that means there is limited water availability across the Peninsula as we work towards the construction of a desalination plant in Port Lincoln," he said. "The desal plant is our most expensive source of water, approximately four times more expensive than producing water from the Happy Valley Water Treatment Plant," he said.
