CNN

US couple Tony and Francine Smarrelli have relocated to Italy for a more affordable retirement. They purchased a 1,500-square-foot property in Scalea, in the southern Italian region of Calabria, for €150,000. They have found life in Italy to be far cheaper, with monthly expenses significantly reduced. They now spend around $1,200 a month between the two of them, compared to the $4,800 to $5,000 they spent in the US. The couple also enjoys the lower cost of living in Italy, with lower mortgage costs, lower internet and water bills, and lower veterinary and electricity bills. They are also able to enjoy cheaper dining out and entertainment, with many restaurants offering affordable prices and local attractions offering discounted prices for tourists.
