New rules for social media, OTT platforms to curb fake news, says Union minister Prakash Javadekar

The Centre announced new rules to regulate online news and OTT platforms to curb the spread of fake news, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar has said. In an exclusive interview to India Today TV on Friday, Union minister Prakash Javadekar said the tightening of rules governing social media and streaming companies was done to stop fake news. The Centre on Thursday announced new rules to curb misuse of social media platforms, as it mandated firms to appoint grievance officer, disclose the first originator of the mischievous information and remove, within 24 hours, content depicting nudity or morphed pictures of women. As per the new rules, social media intermediaries have to appoint grievance officer, who shall register complaints in 24 hours.
