4 Die in Clashes Set Off by India’s Modi Visiting Bangladesh
The DiplomatProtesters in Chattogram and Dhaka denounced Modi and his visit to Bangladesh, sparking clashes with police and counter-protesters. At least four people were killed and scores injured in violent protests on March 26 set off by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Bangladesh to celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence. Modi’s two-day visit, his first abroad since the coronavirus pandemic began, will include commemorating 100 years since the birth of Bangladeshi independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As Abhijnan Rej noted in an overview of Modi’s visit, before the Indian prime minister arrived Hasina’s foreign affairs adviser described India as Bangladesh’s “most important neighbor.” However, Modi is not as popular at the grass-roots level in Bangladesh. “If we move forward hand in hand, the development of our people is inevitable.” While Modi’s trip is mainly focused on Bangladesh’s anniversary celebrations, the visit also has a political agenda at home, as voting begins on March 27 in several state-level elections, including West Bengal, which borders Bangladesh.
