NAAC’s decision of shifting inspection to online-mode puts Bengal colleges on tenterhooks
The HinduSeveral West Bengal colleges were disappointed after the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, a government agency that evaluates the performance of education institutions and gives them accreditation, shifted the inspection from physical to online mode. The NAAC’s decision comes amid allegations that an Andhra Pradesh institution paid bribes to a visiting NAAC team in exchange for favourable ratings. Until last year, nearly 20% of colleges in the State had the NAAC accreditation, which established their reputation as educational institutions and entitled them to various Central government funds. That was when the State government began pushing institutions to get the accreditation quickly and set up numerous panels at different levels to guide colleges through the process.
