"State animal and public health officials will take the lead in making determinations about whether animals, either at this zoo or in other areas, should be tested for." The agency has recommended that anyone experiencing Covid-19 symptoms should "restrict contact with animals, out of an abundance of caution, including pets, during their illness, just as they would with other people." The New York City zoo is closed during the pandemic but its essential staff is caring for the 6,000 animals inside. "There is no evidence that animals play a role in the transmission of Covid-19 to people other than the initial event in the Wuhan market, and no evidence that any person has been infected with Covid-19 in the US by animals, including by pet dogs or cats," according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
