Pay Dirt is Slate’s money advice column. Dear Pay Dirt, I mistakenly took in my 16-year-old niece “Bethany” and 14-year-old niece “Lily” two years ago. But it sounds like you didn’t give your nieces a series of house rules to help provide some desperately needed structure. You’ve answered your own question, by the way: “I am this close to telling my sister to get on a plane and deal with this or I am putting the girls on a plane myself.” Exactly. While you’re at it, this is an excellent time to tell your sister, “My house, my rules,” and remind her that being an uncle is not the same thing as being a rug.
