NHS pay and pension rises to swallow up half of Reeves’s £22bn spending spree

Research by the Nuffield Trust think tank shows that the NHS is already planning to spend £13 billion extra in the current year – far ahead of the extra £10.4bn it has been allocated. But a relatively generous capital budget is of limited use when the day-to-day budget is squeezed.” The Health Secretary has insisted that technology will be used to drive productivity improvements, with more than £2 billion set aside for programmes to free up staff time and improve patient access to care. ‘It’s reform or die’ On Wednesday, the Chancellor said the £22.6 billion increase in the day-to-day health budget was a “down payment” on a 10-year plan for the NHS which will be published in spring. On Thursday, Wes Streeting told Radio 4’s The World At One programme that he is “not going native” on NHS reform.
