Marshall struggles to unite GOP establishment in Kansas race
Associated PressTOPEKA, Kan. — Roger Marshall represents western Kansas in a congressional district rich in GOP votes and donors that has given the state four U.S. senators over the past 50 years. “It’s still Kobach’s to lose,” said Tim Shallenburger, a former state GOP chairman and state treasurer. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has told people that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo remains his first choice for the Kansas seat, said a top Senate GOP aide familiar with McConnell’s thinking. While McConnell hasn’t talked to Pompeo since January or had allies do so, he has had several conversations with President Donald Trump about the Kansas race and shown Trump polling indicating that Kobach could win the nomination, according to a Republican familiar with Senate leaders’ thinking. University of Kansas political scientist Patrick Miller said Marshall’s embrace of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda seems “half-hearted” next to Kobach.
