Lake Pedder protesters Brenda Hean, Max Price left Hobart in a Tiger Moth biplane bound for Canberra. They were never seen again
ABCOne of Tasmania's greatest unsolved mysteries remains the disappearance of two people as they flew to Canberra in 1972 while campaigning to save the famed Lake Pedder. Key points: In 1972, a Tiger Moth biplane disappeared en route from Hobart to Canberra while carrying campaigners for the Save Lake Pedder movement The mystery of the plane's disappearance has never been solved, though there are a lot of theories Lake Pedder, flooded in 1972, still retains its pink quartzite beach under the water Brenda Hean, a piano teacher and activist, and experienced pilot Max Price took off from an airport near Hobart on September 8, 1972 in Price's Tiger Moth plane. While the group notes that draining the lake would be the "largest ecological restoration project in Australia and the world," they believe it can be restored with the famed pink quartzite beach intact. "Draining Lake Pedder would be economically and environmentally irresponsible and bordering on madness," said Guy Barnett, the Minister for Energy.
