The BPF factor in Assam: Can Hagrama Mohilary retain his hold over Bodos?

That the BJP and Bodoland People’s Front were heading for a split became evident in December last year when the former got into an alliance with the United People’s Party Liberal to come to power in the Bodoland Territorial Council. And finally on February 27, BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary announced that he would join the Congress-led Mahajot for the upcoming state polls. The vote share in seats contested was 25 per cent and 39 per cent respectively. While BPF has joined the Mahajot led by Congress and comprising the Left and Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF, the BJP has found a new Bodo star in Pramod Boro, along with ally Asom Gana Parishad. The combined vote share of present Mahajot constituents in 2011 and 2016 was 58 per cent and 48 per cent.
