Read our privacy policy An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 rattled Southern California residents on Thursday morning. The tremor was located just over four miles north of the coastal city of Malibu, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The ShakeAlert system, which notified residents of the tremor on their cell phones, had initially estimated the earthquake at above magnitude 5. open image in gallery A map from the U.S. Geological Survey shows the earthquake’s center. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it had surveyed Los Angeles by land, air, and sea, and found no significant instrastructure or structure damage.
