UCLA makes progress while posting a $28-million athletic department deficit

LA Times

UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond. UCLA’s athletic department posted a deficit of $28.045 million during the 2022 fiscal year, down from the record $62.5 million in 2021. Profits from ticket sales and media rights fees related to schedules returning much closer to normal helped the Bruins more than halve the athletic department deficit from the previous fiscal year. UCLA’s debt of $28.045 million during the 2022 fiscal year was less than half the record $62.5 million from 2021, though it still left the athletic department facing a hefty four-year shortfall of $130.8 million roughly 1½ years before it can tap a spigot of cash from the Big Ten Conference. “The severe impact of the pandemic continued to be felt at collegiate athletic departments across the nation in 2021-2022, including the cancellation of games, an inability to host fans, significant losses of ticket sales revenue, media rights, sponsorships and contributions,” UCLA athletic department spokesman Scott Markley said.
