STEPHEN GLOVER: I believe Welby is a good man. But what kind of person rails against slavery while staying silent about a monstrous abuser?
Daily MailWitch hunts are ugly things, and whenever you spot one the best thing to do is usually to walk in the opposite direction. Let us therefore give Mr Welby the benefit of any doubt, and settle on the fact that he was told allegations about Smyth in 2013, and failed to notify the police. As the report puts it: 'In effect, three and a half years were lost, a time within which John Smyth could have been brought to justice and any abuse he was committing in South Africa discovered and stopped.' As the report puts it: 'In effect, three and a half years were lost, a time within which John Smyth could have been brought to justice' There is of course no suggestion that Mr Welby is sympathetic to child abuse. Setting worldly considerations aside, and forgetting about his own legacy, Justin Welby must recognise that he has failed his Church and, I believe, his God – and resign.
