Italian political philosopher Sebastiano Maffettone in a seminar at the 30th Kolkata International Film Festival on ‘Intolerance, Global Justice and the Media’ on Saturday said dialogue and interchange of ideas between the Indian and Western political theories can help nurture a tolerant environment on both sides. “All the problems we get from Hindutva and the intercultural and the inter-religious relations can be improved if we reinforce basic individual rights that are at the core of Western political theory,” Mr Maffettone said. “From this premise, my idea is to discuss Western and Indian political theories comparatively.” Citing Habermas, Mr Maffettone said that one of the strongest aspects of Western political culture is the deep foundation of liberal democracy. “Where Western political theory is strong — liberalism and foundation of human rights — Indian political theory is weaker, and where Western political theory is weak — the existential space within the realm of justice — Indian political theory is strong,” Mr Maffettone said.
