Widespread rain in southern districts of Tamil Nadu

Widespread rainfall since late Wednesday night across the southern districts of Tamil Nadu led to the district administrators announcing a holiday for schools in Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi on Thursday. Incidentally, there was not much rain in Theni district during the last 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Thursday and the IMD prediction was ‘very light rainfall.’ This came as a big relief to the field staffs at the specially installed check-posts to monitor the movement of vehicles to and from Sabarimala shrine in the neighbouring Kerala. The water logging in low-lying areas in Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Theni, Sivaganga and interior pockets exposed the poor upkeep of the roads and the lack of eviction drive by the civic and municipal authorities. In many districts including Tenkasi, the waterfalls were shut for public as the widespread rains in the western ghats prevented entry throughout the day, officials in the forest department said.
