Sexual assault is not a crime of ignorance: Why consent education does not address the real problem
ABCLast month, the National Student Safety Survey released damning findings about the rates of sexual assault and harassment at Australian universities. Rather, what does our obsession with consent education — further reflected in an array of bizarre metaphors likening sex to, among other things, bike-riding, tea-drinking, and milkshake-sharing — imply about the assumed causes of sexual assault? But, by the same token, how careless and negligent, how utterly perverse and unnatural it is to teach sexual consent as Consent Matters does — without a single explicit reference to patriarchy, privilege or power, or to the tragedies which compel universities to mandate this kind of course. These cases highlight what should be obvious: sexual assault is not a matter of ignorance of the “rules” of consensual sex, but a willingness to break them.
