Water Dispute: KRMB Demands Realistic Assessment from AP, Telangana
Deccan ChronicleVijayawada:The Krishna River Management Board has asked AP and Telangana to come up with a realistic assessment of their requirement of water for drinking purposes and irrigation in the areas falling under the Nagarjunasagar left and right canals respectively, to allocate the 66 tmc ft of water that is available below the minimum draw down levels. The KRMB reportedly expressed its intent to allocate the available water based on a realistic assessment on requirement so that there would not be any friction between the states. With regard to Telangana’s allegations that AP was drawing water beyond the permitted quantity, AP officials said they drew the surplus water from the Krishna river when it witnessed floods twice; the water would go waste into the sea if not used. AP water resources engineer-in-chief M. Venkateswara Rao said, “As per directions from KRMB, chief engineers from both AP and TG will take up a realistic assessment of requirement of water.”
