Mint Explainer: Pakistan dissolves National Assembly ahead of elections
Live MintPakistan's president dissolved the country's parliament late Wednesday, paving the way for an election amid political and economic turmoil. • Pakistan’s powerful military, which clashed with Khan during his tenure as Prime Minister, is also accused of exerting pressure on Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf by engineering defections from senior leaders. Once the census is approved by a body known as the Council of Common Interest, Pakistan’s election commission is bound to redraw constituency boundaries. • However, the Election Commission may require as long as four months to carry out the delimitation exercise, which clashes with the other rules calling for an election within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly. • The Election Commission of Pakistan told the media that the elections could be delayed till next year while the delimitation exercise carries on.
