Indian women storm whisky world, make alcobev companies take note

Garima Singh, a whisky connoisseur, laughs and recounts an incident when asked if there is a stereotype attached to women and whisky in India. "Women consuming alcoholic beverages within the luxury spirit segment, including whisky, has grown from a penetration of 25% to 40% in the last two years," Diageo India's Chief Marketing Officer Ruchira Jaitly tells India Today Digital. "You see a lot more men drinking white spirits and cocktails and women gravitating towards whisky," Basu tells India Today Digital. "This all-woman whisky club was the brainchild of the hotel’s VP and General Manager Meena Bhatia and became a sought-after place for whisky makers to reach out to women with their new offerings," says Kumar. Jaitly says having an all-woman panel of whisky tasters "becomes critical as we see more penetration in the consumption of alcoholic beverages among women".
