Kashi, Mathura, Delhi, Lucknow: 'Right to worship' claims gain momentum post Ayodhya
India TodayOver the last few days, a number of cases in the Kashi Vishwanath Temple-Gyanvaapi mosque have been heard by different levels of the judiciary, even as the political battle played out over the “religious character” of the premises. In September 2020, five Delhi-based women filed civil suits in the Varanasi civil court on the “Right to Worship”, seeking daily access to the Shringaar Gauri temple, the Swayambhu Jyotirling, the Maa Ganga temple, and the Nandi temple to offer daily prayers. The Supreme Court is now also hearing a plea filed by the mosque’s management committee - Anjuman-e-Intezamia mosque, which has said that all pending suits are barred under the Places of Worship Act, 1991. MATHURA The Mathura Krishna Janmabhoomi temple and the Shahi Idgah mosque dispute was settled in 1968, after a compromise was reached in the title suit and the civil court passed a decree. The two petitions, regarding the Right to Worship and the demand for "restoration of the temple" and removal of the mosque, are pending before Delhi’s Saket district court.
