'Glow-in-the-dark geckos' help in quest to preserve farmland biodiversity, study finds

Glow-in-the-dark geckos are providing Canberra scientists with vital clues in their quest to improve biodiversity on Australian agricultural land. "These trees act as really strong landmarks for pulling the geckos through the landscape … I was able to show that these trees are really important," Mr Kay said. Mr Kay said the research could help inform the way farmers and agricultural policy-makers, approach protecting biodiversity on their land. The research also suggests that cropping in slightly more strategic ways could be of benefit, Mr Kay said "We could, potentially, pay farmers to crop directionally," he said. "So if you've got two patches of habitat maybe they could, instead of just going around the fence line … be strategic with the way that we crop the landscape," he said.
