SP’s Abdullah Azam loses UP Assembly membership after conviction

Samajwadi Party MLA Abdullah Azam Khan was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, days after a Moradabad court sentenced him to two years in prison in a 15-year-old case. The disqualified SP leader, who represented the Suar Assembly constituency, is the son of Azam Khan, the influential Muslim face of the party and formerly a 10-term MLA from Rampur Sadar. The case was registered in 2008 against Mr. Abdullah Azam Khan and his father, under Sections 341 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code. Mr. Abdullah’s father, Mr. Azam Khan had been disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha a few months ago, after his conviction by an MP-MLA court in a 2019 case, for making provocative remarks against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the then-District Magistrate of Rampur Aunjaneya Kumar Singh.
