Nearly 76% of UP’s prison population is of undertrials: Report

Hindustan Times

LUCKNOW Over 85,000 undertrials, close to 76% of the state’s total prison population, are languishing in jails in Uttar Pradesh. On Saturday, speaking at the first All-India District Legal Services Authorities’ meet in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also urged the country’s judiciary to speed up release of undertrials who were languishing in jails, awaiting legal aid. Undertrials outnumbered convicts Another statistical report on the prison population since 1901 shows that the number of undertrial prisoners always used to be lower than the number of convicts. “The number of undertrials was lower earlier, especially during the British period, which shows the justice was quick then,” said Singh who is now practicing law in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court.
