Bareilly bridge tragedy: Why Google Maps failed?

Three men driving to a wedding—supposedly following a route recommended by Google Maps—plunged into a river in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, on November 23. Satellite images showing a portion of the Bareilly bridge collapsed in September last year and Google Maps suggesting a walk across the bridge on November 25, 2024. To suggest the best route, Google Maps primarily uses data from two sources: aggregated real-time data from other Google users and information from local authorities. As per its Maps Content Partnership page, Google Maps has tied up with private organisations with reliable geospatial data and government agencies on national, regional, and even municipality levels to improve the app. On Monday, November 25, India Today found Google Maps still suggesting the bridge route to users opting to cover the distance on foot, even though the route was unavailable on the app for four-wheelers.
