National Gallery to show Canberra's largest ever Indigenous art exhibition, with 260 works spanning generations
ABCDharug man Billy Bain has come a long way from creating ceramics in his parents' basement during the pandemic. "I only graduated art school four years ago, just before COVID, and was pretty much working from mum and dad's house in their basement for about two years after that," Mr Bain said. Tina Baum, senior curator of First Nations art at the National Gallery of Australia, hopes the collection can challenge nations of what First Nations art is. "Truth telling is a really important part of the healing in this country, and it's important to tell those stories that communities tell still through that oral tradition," Ms Baum said. "We do talk about being the oldest living, continuous culture in the world, and it's something that we're really proud of and that Australia should be proud of," Ms Baum said.
