Ramadan in Australia: Planning ahead is key, as Muslims begin religious fasting

ABC

Ramadan is about religious focus and family, but as a busy working mother, it is also about being organised enough not to miss that all-important caffeine hit. Sitting in her office in Sydney's south-west, Ms Sultan said apart from the important spiritual aspect of the month-long fast from dawn to dusk, it is all about planning ahead for her three school-aged children, aged 11, 9 and 7. "Only my eldest, my 11- year-old daughter is doing Ramadan but I encourage her to take a break during the month if it is getting too much for her," Ms Sultan said. Community involvement The president of the Auburn Islamic Community Centre in Sydney's west, Mohamed Al Zoubi, said all Muslims except children, the sick, elderly or pregnant or breastfeeding women can take part in Ramadan. There are around 600,000 Muslims around Australia and a lot of them fast during this special month if they can," Mr Al Zoubi said.
