Why Mizoram CM Lalduhoma played peacemaker to Myanmar rebel groups

India Today

Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma recently played a key role in facilitating the merger of two Myanmar-based pro-democracy rebel factionsthe Chinland Council and the Interim Chin National Consultative Council. While Lalduhoma’s mediation in the merger of Chin resistance groups has drawn attention, this is not the first time that Mizoram has played an active role in Myanmar’s ethnic conflicts. Following the coup, large numbers of Chin refugees, including pro-democracy activists, members of Myanmar’s National Unity Government, elected parliamentarians and police personnel, sought asylum in Mizoram, citing ethnic and cultural affinity with the Mizos. The merger of the Chinland Council and the Interim Chin National Consultative Council into the Chin National Council is expected to consolidate resistance efforts and enhance coordination among Chin armed groups against Myanmar’s junta. While the unification of the Chinland Council and the Interim Chin National Consultative Council under the Chin National Council could strengthen the Chin resistance, it also underscores the broader geopolitical tensions surrounding Myanmar’s post-coup landscape.
