Campers rescued as heavy rain and flooding hits northern New South Wales across New Year
ABCThe new year has got off to a dramatic start in northern New South Wales with heavy rain causing waterways across the Tweed to break their banks overnight. Key points: Rain lashed the Tweed region of northern NSW overnight The highest 24-hour total was 307mm at Limpinwood, west of Murwillumbah BOM advises of minor to moderate flooding of waterways across the Tweed The State Emergency Service has carried out 13 rescues, including the rescue of a family of four who became trapped when water surrounded their caravan on the banks of the Oxley River near Tyalgum. A severe weather warning for heavy rainfall was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 11am for the area between Tweed Heads and Ballina and to areas to the west including Lismore. The SES has advised that the Tweed River at Murwillumbah may exceed the minor flood level of three metres this afternoon, with further rises possible if heavy rain continues.
