Social media offers new mothers support when society doesn't. But is it always helpful?

It's considered the most vulnerable time in a woman's life. Postpartum is a relatively new topic on social media where it's no longer confused with depression. Megan Gow, a dietitian and senior lecturer at University of Sydney and Westmead Children's Hospital was motivated to undertake the research by her own social media experience in postpartum. Dr Gow's latest research is aimed at finding interventions to interrupt harmful social media content, and while the results aren't yet published, her findings are clear. "We've done a survey study that recruited more than 500 women and more than 90 per cent said they wanted to receive health information via social media which is really positive," she says.
