Karnataka: Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Programme of ₹8,000 crore aimed at gaining confidence of MLAs?

As a mid-term rejig remains an undercurrent in the Congress government in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seems to be making attempts to gain the confidence of the party legislators to continue in office for the full term by announcing the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Programme with ₹8,000 crore in the State Budget for 2025-26. Speculated ‘formula’ After the 2023 Assembly results and during the tussle for the top job, Mr. Siddaramaiah was chosen as the Chief Minister based on the Congress legislators’ support while Mr. Shivakumar was appointed his deputy. As a purported “rotational Chief Minister formula” become a talking point in the corridors of power, Mr. Siddaramaiah appears to be deploying various tactics to keep Mr. Shivakumar in check amid the latter’s recent talks with the party high command and passing on a subtle message that he is ready to go to any extent if the Chief Minister’s post is denied to him, as per some “formula” that is speculated to have been worked out during the formation of the government in May 2023. Importantly, the Chief Minister retains the discretionary powers to release funds to constituencies, and he is expected to release funds to legislators who are willing to demonstrate their loyalty to him when it matters.
